Technical support
One of the prime roles of the Department of Water and Energy (DWE) is providing expert advice and technical support to local water utilities (LWUs) and other stakeholders in respect to non-metropolitan urban water supply and sewerage services. This support includes planning, pricing, capital works, operation, maintenance and training.
This support includes, but is not limited to the following:
- Regular inspections and advice on water and sewage treatment works operational problems
- Conducting water supply and sewerage operator training seminars and courses
- Pre commissioning inspections of Fluoridation Plants and technical assistance to NSW Health to enable councils to comply with requirements under the Fluoridation of Public Water Supplies Act 1957 and in certification of fluoridation officers.
- Ongoing LWU dam safety inspections and mentoring of operators
- Ongoing LWU liquid trade waste discharge approvals
- Conducting regional trade waste regulation courses
- Providing help desk services
- Conducting dam safety inspection courses.
In carrying out its leadership and mentoring role, DWE has prepared a series of comprehensive guidelines and software tools to provide a framework for efficient implementation of the best practice management requirements by each LWU. These include:
