Water Licensing

Sydney Water Corporation

Sydney Water Corporation (Sydney Water) is a State-owned corporation which supplies drinking water, wastewater services and some stormwater services to the people of Sydney, the Illawarra and the Blue Mountains. It is Australia's largest water utility.

Sydney Water's Water Management Licence defines Sydney Water's water access rights and obligations, and regulates the operation and management of water management works. The works are located at Botany Wetlands, Manly Dam and North Richmond Water Filtration Plant.

North Richmond Water Filtration Plant is licensed to extract and use water from the Hawkesbury River near North Richmond for potable use. Sydney Water is licensed to extract a maximum of 55 megalitres from the river per day, with no extraction permitted when flow in the Hawkesbury is less than, or equal to, the 99th percentile of natural flows at the off-take points.

Sydney Water does not extract water from Manly Dam or Botany Wetlands. These sections of the licence cover the management of those works. Sydney Water is required by the licence to investigate the feasibility and likely outcomes of implementing an environmental flow regime downstream of Manly Dam, primarily to improve the health of Manly Lagoon.
