Water Management

Metering

Effective water management requires accurate and reliable information on the amount of water extracted by water users.

Under the conditions and terms of their licences, water extractors in NSW may be required to have a meter fitted to the extraction works.

NSW standards for water extraction

The NSW Water Extraction Monitoring Policy (PDF 142KB) addresses the use of water meters and other monitoring techniques in NSW. In addition, the Department of Water and Energy, in conjunction with State Water, has developed the NSW Water Extraction Monitoring Standards (PDF 593KB) which set criteria for the installation of water measurements devices.

National standards for water extraction

National standards for water meters are currently being developed under the National Water Initiative, and will apply to meters that are installed after the date that the national standard commences.

For more information on national standards in relation to NSW go to www.ruralwatermetering.nsw.gov.au.

IPART and metering

Under the 2006 IPART determination some irrigators in the unregulated river system, can elect to be billed for their water management charges on a two-part tariff. If you have a water meter, go to water pricing for more information on alternative tariff arrangements.
