Central West Regional Algal Coordinating Committee
The Central West RACC provides coordination of routine monitoring of algal events undertaken by Councils, State Water and the Department of Water and Energy (DWE) in the Lachlan and Macquarie Valleys.
The Lachlan Catchment includes the Shire Councils of Cowra, Forbes, Lachlan, Carathool and Hay. The water storages within this catchment include; Wyangala Dam, Carcoar Dam, Lake Cargelligo and Lake Curlew, and Lake Brewster.
The Macquarie Catchment includes the Shire Councils of Wellington, Warren, Narromine and Dubbo. The water storages within this catchment include; Windamere Dam, and Burrendong Dam. The Central West RACC hase developed an Algal Contingency Plan, which is designed to be a document that can be updated easily as information comes to hand. The Plan was tested in 1998 when a significant blue-green algae bloom occurred in the Macquarie River. This bloom extended from Burrendong Dam to the effluent streams around Warren, a distance of several hundred kilometres. This major bloom was the result of low water levels and algal blooms in Burrendong Dam. It was detected in mid February and continued throughout autumn and into winter. The extent and continual high concentrations of blue-green algae posed major problems for all water users including Councils, landholders, industries and river supply schemes. The following summer saw severe blue-green algae problems in the Lachlan River from Lake Cargelligo downstream to Oxley.
RACC Membership
Membership of the Central West RACC is dynamic, with representatives from different local and State agencies having varying levels of involvement depending on the situation. Agencies represented include the Department of Water and Energy, Department of Primary Industries, Department of Health, Rural Lands Protection Board, Department of Environment and Climate Change, 10 Councils as well as officers from the Emergency Management Services (NSW Police).
